For instance, there's no statewide "Department of Motor Vehicles" in Hawai'i -- motor vehicle registrations are handled by each county government. Thus, if one moves from the Big Island to Maui (ie. from the "County of Hawai'i" to the "County of Maui"), they have to re-register their motor vehicle(s) and sometimes have to pay additional "county" fees and/or taxes. Certain used vehicles might be cheaper on O'ahu, compared to parts of the continental United States; however, those same vehicles might be more expensive on the Big Island or Maui. Sometimes, the difference in cost is negligible. And, sometimes, the difference is large enough to make shipping a car from the continental U.S. a financially attractive proposition. As for public transportation, if one's in a part of Hawai'i where a bus shows up once every 5 hours, most folks with either catch a ride with a friend or neighbor, hitchhike, or simply walk to their destination...
