Many things are already answered and few have never been asked before, so anyone can query on the the big "G" and "oggle" the results. One of many many is a guide (NOT mine either!) Relocation Guide
and explains a lot or pick any of them. Just look in this manner and there are guides on line for DMV, unemployment, movers, etc out there as well.
Cars? Most info says that "used" cars are plentiful so why ship a car and pay shipping? They cost nearly the same as anywhere in the USA supposedly, depending on all the variables. Also, public transport seems wonderful so you may prefer just getting some exercise and WALK to a bus stop, or walk, period!! A new concept for many Americans that wait for a parking spot several minutes burning gas, instead of just parking 20 yards further away in a lot and walking!
This is a wonderful forum but much can be found that is current in a number of places! Much success and happy "paradise" obsession!

Jeepers, not all islands have decent public transport and some of them have everything too far away to walk. On Oahu you don't need a car. In downtown Honolulu a car is almost a detriment. Basically, anywhere from Kalihi to Kaimuki on Oahu is too densely populated to make keeping a car worthwhile. However, on some of the other islands, the public transport is almost none existent and a car is necessary to get around with.

That's a good link for a relocation guide, although it's for the island of Oahu only.

That site seems great but, I didn't see anything about apartments. It was all about homes. Not everyone plans to buy a home, but rent. Great site though

Yes, of course, I know. Oahu is the focus of using public transport, after reading it is pretty clear. Thanks for underlining that point though.

Have you looked at apartments dot com and craigslist? Minimal query in a search site can find a lot of info. Some used zillow but many say it is possibly not reliable. Vrbo may also be helpful.

One final thought; most in the Hawaii area suggest actually being there to see and get a leased apartment, as "good ones" go really fast, and long distance seeking may not be in your best interests. Apparently, the best approach is GO, and plan to do your search once there from a temporary month to month place.
In addition, any real estate person in a Hawaii location can be contacted for assistance. They have info on places and management companies for rentals.

And lets not forget that Oahu has many areas outside of Honolulu proper, where the bus doesn't make time sense.

While guides and answers to many questions about moving to Hawai'i can be found by anyone who's proficient at using an internet search engine, the information one finds might not be entirely accurate or up-to-date.

For instance, there's no statewide "Department of Motor Vehicles" in Hawai'i -- motor vehicle registrations are handled by each county government. Thus, if one moves from the Big Island to Maui (ie. from the "County of Hawai'i" to the "County of Maui"), they have to re-register their motor vehicle(s) and sometimes have to pay additional "county" fees and/or taxes.

Certain used vehicles might be cheaper on O'ahu, compared to parts of the continental United States; however, those same vehicles might be more expensive on the Big Island or Maui. Sometimes, the difference in cost is negligible. And, sometimes, the difference is large enough to make shipping a car from the continental U.S. a financially attractive proposition. There are many pricing guides such as Edmunds.com that can account for "regional variations" in used vehicle prices.

As for public transportation, if one's in a part of Hawai'i where a bus shows up once every 5 hours, most folks with either catch a ride with a friend or neighbor, hitchhike, or simply walk to their destination...
