Me and my wife are still planning our relocation to the island of Oahu. My wife has a BA in Interior Design but wants to go back to school for teaching. Would it be better to go back to school in the mainland and move when she finishes school or is it better to move soon, and have her go to school in Hawaii and get her certificate there. I've been trying to do some of the research on this but I wanted to hear from people who have done the same thing. I've heard she will have better luck finding a job if we are able to establish residence there and go to school there than relocating after she gets her degree.
Can she teach at private and/or charter schools with her current degree while she works on getting her teacher's degree? Is it even possible for her to get these types of jobs?
Anyone know what the current market are for teachers in Hawaii, specificaly, Oahu/Honolulu as I am in the IT industry and would have much better luck finding jobs there than the outlying areas/islands.
I'm in TEP program now. She'd be better off getting it here then her experience and connections would be here. Better for her in many ways. Also once you are enrolled in a TEP program you may teach as an emergency hire, but it will be at a lower rate than a licensed teacher, I believe it's $31,000 for unlicensed? If she does her program online through UH Manoa or Uh Hilo, I think she would be ok and may be able to use her teaching position as her field work IF it's in the same field as her licensure. Starting salary without having completed a state approved teacher education program is $32,713 and $43,157 if you do complete one (numbers are for a new teacher, no previous teaching experience). Add a bit more if you have a masters, about $3.5K.
