Have any of you teachers found a job not long AFTER moving to Hawaii, or doesn't it matter to be waiting on the mainland? I'm wondering if I'll have better odds once on the island (more interviews, quicker availability, etc...).

Any suggestions would help!

From some of the teachers I've chatted with, even being on the island didn't help much with DOE. Apparently, they have some fairly convoluted hiring practices. One teacher I know of was on island waiting to hear from DOE and finally called and bugged them the week before school started. They then told him he should have filled out his paperwork a month earlier (which he had). He then had an interview and got hired but he said it was a strange way to do things.

The public school teachers in Hawaii are all doing furlough Fridays and getting a pay cut for it. I'm not sure how many they will be hiring for next year. Hawaii State, of which the DOE is only one department, is trying to cut back in as many places as they can and less teachers will probably be one of the cuts. In Hawaii, the Department of Education (based on Oahu) runs all the schools on all the islands, but you probably already know that.

Hmmm, that's interesting. Do you know if their status was "active" with DOE? My husband is the one looking for a job and his status is active and he's had a first interview...right now we're on the mainland just waiting around...Wish us luck!

With so many applicants and few positions it has to be a bit of luck and persistence IMO. Being at the right place at the right time.

Good-luck
