Hmmmmmmm..... You might be onto something! Maybe they could come with a sand anchor like the BIG kites have so they can't fly away and hurt someone?

Something like this maybe?

Trying to get a permit to sell anything to the tourists, let alone selling anything on the beach is just about impossible.

Sand Anchor (http://www.shop.thirdcoastkites.com/Sand-Anchor-gk1001.htm - broken link)

Yes, good idea and a great start to anchor. Using a folding fabric, with solar cells sewn INTO the "protective sun area" various ways, (see--http://www.compactappliance.com/Voltaic-Solar-Charger-Messenger-Bag-Silver-Panels-1004-S/1004-S,default,pd.html# ) could be used as well, for charging cells and various devices, while on the beach too. A complete, sun shade, folded, easily anchored, that powers devices too, could be a multi purpose goal. Useful in windy beach areas that sustain a kite flight, would "fly" the shade, expose solar to sun rays, and enable takedown and transport away, after the fun is over. Anyone want to develop as a small business? Be my guest and design & patent, produce. Call it the "Aloha - Made in the Shade " and use the typical flowery designs as fabric?

It's not an issue. Beach umbrellas are allowed.

I had to stop and think, because I don't personally like to fuss with umbrellas... but a number of stores sell beach umbrellas. like WalMart and Target and Sears. And I just got a photo this morning from my buddy, of his day surfing at Kaanapili Point... with his board and his big blue umbrella. And right behind him is a family with their EasyUp 10x10.

Some other friends have a portable cabana, something like this, and really like it. Walmart.com: Rio Quick Ship Portable Beach Shelter: Patio Furniture & Decor

The key thing is to anchor them well against the breeze, and yeah, those screw in dog stakes are good.

Won't go to the beach without one. Just make sure to put it down when it's unattended so if it blows you don't impale anyone. When it's up we fill a big cloth shopping bag with sand and tie it to the crank with a cord that drops it onto the sand. Just keeps in in place a bit better if you were to start snoozing - which happens a lot : )
