My family and I are thinking of moving to Hawaii and I know that cost of living will vary greatly depending on location and spending habits, but since we haven't settled on a specific area yet I'm looking for info on all areas. I know that my husband and I will both have to have jobs so I will have to place my kids in day care. Does anyone have ideas on good day cares and how much they charge? Also I'd like any info on the cost of things like diapers, formula, baby wipes and such. I already use store brands for all this and don't plan to change that since they really all work just as well. Also, does hawaii have a WIC program and is it any good? Do they use vouchers or a distribution center? Any other advice on moving to Hawaii and living in Hawaii with young children would be appreciated.

If you are now on the various welfare programs, why would you want to move to Hawaii? Hawaii is more expensive and probably pays you less money than you are getting now. Stay where you are.

If you're anticipating that you will qualify for WIC when you move here then I would respectfully suggest that you stay where you are.

I am not on any assistance program nor do I expect to be when I get there but I have personal experience with murphy's law and want to know what options will be available if I need them. After all it's not like we will be able to just hop in the car and move to my parent's house if one of us gets laid off or something.

Jobs for newcomers are almost non-existent, unless you have a particular skill that is in very high demand. What type of jobs are you thinking you will have?

Since you are asking about various welfare programs before you even get here, that's a RED FLAG.

Having now looked at your other posts, I highly suggest you move to the Mobile, Alabama area instead.
The cost of living is much lower and the availability of jobs is much higher. (We have a family condo in Daphne - just across the bay, and I have spent a lot of time there.)

My suggestion would be to wait and not move to Hawai'i until you have a rainy day savings account filled. At least then, IF you find yourself in that position, you CAN fly back home and get re-estabished.

I do live in Mobile, AL and I hate it here. My husband's company has an office in Hawaii so IF we decide to move there we will see about him getting a transfer so at least one of us would have a job immediately. Also we don't plan on moving very soon. I want to get our debts paid off first and like McFrostyJ said have a decent "rainy day fund" but in order for us to make a decision I need more info. We are not dead set on this and have just recently started looking in to Hawaii as an option. And as for me asking about assistance programs, it's like they say "hope for the best but plan for the worst". I would appreciate it if people would stop saying don't bother and just answer the questions. I want to make my own decision.

You have not said which island - I assume Oahu?
The island makes a huge difference.

I would feel better about the schools in the Mobile area than anywhere in Hawaii. Don't shortchange your little ones. Maybe a move across the bay to the Daphne/Fairhope area is better for you? The schools should be much better than the typical Mobile ones?

If my husband transferred his job would require him to fly from island to island (at the companies expense) so I'm looking for info on all of them. I don't know if we'll have to live on a specific island or not. He's handling the job part I'm just trying to get a feel for the living part. Are the schools there that bad? I don't see how they could be worse than louisiana. I had a text book that was 20 years older than I was.
