I think our state economy really has to catch up with the aspirations of the people. You have folks from the mainland going to the big island or Maui let's say and then saying heck we'll start on own subsistence farm. But their mortgage would be so high due to high land prices (controlled by big estates), that farming is invariably unsustainable. High demand jobs like nursing nationwide; here nurses can't find a job. List goes on. Seems half the population are realtors. Selling the idea of hawaii is what's profitable.
