Aloha - I realize this is a very broad question depending on circumstances. Will be transplanting 9 year old adorable,well-behaved silky terrier when we retire to BI in 8 mo. Plan to move from SFR to SFR somewhere on Kona Coast. Any advice?

I think you'll find that ticks and fleas are a bigger issue than where you've been living. Everyone i know with a dog complains about it.

Be sure you've read up thoroughly on Hawai'i's rabies quarantine law, and what it takes to comply. HiloDiver is the onboard expert on the process, and you can pull up previous threads on the subject using the Search function.

My son had a black lab and he absolutely loved it. Our friends invited him on Doggy Play Dates, usually at he beach. He didn't have the issue of fleas and ticks, unfortunately, my son did not prepare properly for the move and Buddy had to do "Time" in quarantine. But once out of pergatory, he did just great.

Are there a lot of ticks in Hawaii? Seems like when I'm in places like Kentucky or Missouri I get them on me but never in Hawaii. Are there more on some islands versus others?

Ticks occur occasionally, but I'd think the bigger problem would be mosquitoes which cause heartworm. There are monthly pills, though, for heartworm so once the little dog is here, it can visit the vet and get a prescription for heartworm preventative medicine. As a silky terrier, they are sort of a house dog, aren't they? Wouldn't one house be similar to another?

Probably safer for a dog in Hawaii. No snakes, no skunks, no cougars, no eagles, no coyotes nor alligators, either.

Oddly enough we found a tuft of fur on the side of our car and it had a HUGE tick in it. Someone must have picked it out of their dog and tossed it out the apartment window. It must not have attached to the dog yet, because it's head was intact and it hadn't eaten in a while.

Ticks are a problem in Idaho too, especially now in the spring. Pulled a couple off my daughter when we camped in our younger days. Thanks Jungjohann for the mental pic of dog in slippers. At least he won't have to wear his snow boots anymore! (Not kidding)! He hated those!

My dogs seem happier here. My girl is 10 years old and is back to puppy like energy. We have seen ticks and fleas but preventatives keep it under control. New hazards in the yard: mongoose, neighborhood chickens, an abundance of pit bulls in the area, hitchhikers, and tourists

I have not taken them to the beach because they have those signs that say no domesticated animals, are they like the speed limit signs on the highway - locals ignore?
