"Talk story" is a useful phase used in different ways by different people, depending on the situatation.

"Talk story" is a phase that is used for chatting. If someone's chatting is grounded in gossip, well then, that is the direction their talk story it will lead. If their interests are in something else (surfing, art, gardening, hiking, health, science, politics, religion, whatever), then that is the direction their talk story will lead.

Also, "Talk story" is often used as indicating a community meeting. Legislators hold "talk story" sessions in communities as a forum to present information and to hear the audience's questions/comments. Or, someone in a leadership position will hold a "Talk Story" to hear the voices of those they lead (condo management, homeowner group's management, etc.)

Honolulu has had a "Talk Story Festival" for many years, with storytelling.

It is a great phrase that covers many variations of chatting.
