I dont think I have ever taken advantage of any kamaaina discount, has anybody 'who has actually lives on the islands" received them and for what? I know they offer it at hotels at times..
I love going to Hilo and saying "turn right diamond head or turn left ewa of the stop sign",
Can you actually use those terms other than Honolulu? Makai, mauka, ewa, diamond head. How the h' would it work up in Haleiwa.
Seriously, the ONLY way I remember mauka and makai and which is which is solely for the food court at ala moana named "the makai food court. I know which side it's located, so that means the opposite must be mauka (and not pronounced "mocha" as I sometimes slip and say).

Besides the huge hotel discounts - you can get them at restaurants, things with admission fees (example, Bishop Museum), rentals (like surfing/snorkeling stuff) - things like catamaran rides/amusement activities - mostly things tourists pay for that locals get a discount for.

Yup. I've also gotten small discounts in retail stores by providing my HI ID along with my credit card when I paid. Not everyone will do it, but a few people have.
These discounts are offered by a lot of tourist attractions as a way of attracting repeat business from locals. So attractions like whale watch cruises often have them. And some shops do too, such as Hilo Hatties, where kama'aina get 20% off on Aloha shirts.
It's only 15% off garment at Hilo Hattie now. And almost everything there is made in China.
Aloha, i remember that it used to be easy to establish residency in Hawai'i? Is that still the case?
That depends on what you mean by residency - for instance, mainland students have a high bar to establish Hawaii residency in the eyes of the University of Hawaii.

Well you have to establish residency to vote or get a drivers license right? Or has that changed?

Stores, not so much. Tourist attractions, yes, because they want the chance to make a repeat customer out of you. Hotels can be surprising. I got a $500 room at Hilton one time for $100. Pretty cool.

You don't have to be a Hawaii resident to get a drivers license in Hawaii. You have to prove US legal presence but you don't have to show Hawaii residency
