I am currently working on my MSW and have been looking at jobs in Hawaii as one of the places I may possibly want to move to. I applied for a bunch of the jobs with the State Judiciary and I recieved an email back from one of them letting me know my score based on my experience and education.

I am just looking for information about what is it like being a social worker for the state judiciary in Hawaii from someone that has experience. I am not planning on moving to Hawaii currently as I don't have a job offer or even an interview at this point but I just want to find out more informatoin to see if it something I want to pursue. I will be finishing my degree in August and am beginning to look for possible jobs now to see what's out there.

Thanks for any info!

I'm an MSW student too, so I can't help with experience, but do you have specific questions? What type of work do you want to do? I can can ask one of my teachers, but your question is both very broad ("what's it like") and super specific (state jobs).

Agreed, don't limit yourself to the state only and you should do just fine there. But then again they are Civil Service Positions.

Job Opportunities
The Hawai`i State Judiciary

The majority of the jobs in the Judiciary are civil service positions. These jobs include specialized and complex clerical and paraprofessional support; professional occupations such as social workers in areas including probation, treatment courts and guardian ad litem; administrative and managerial positions; and a limited number of semi-skilled and trade positions.
Exempt positions are filled outside the civil service process. Exempt Positions and Other Related Opportunities may include exempt law clerk and court support staff jobs, or Judiciary related opportunities such as appointments with the grand jury counsel.

I'm looking to other agencies as well, however, I felt like a civil service job may be more likely to hire from out of state than a job in a smaller, nonprofit agency. I'm not sure exactly what kind of work I want to do, just looking for things I might find interesting. I have experience with kids, adolescents and families mainly, and also in a hospital. WIth a lot of sites, you can read different reviews about working for different companies, but I couldn't find anything about civil service jobs in Hawaii. I was just looking for general information about experiences or the climate of those types of jobs- are they viewed well by people that have worked for them, the public etc.
