"The San Francisco Chronicle reported on Monday that Larry Ellison, the billionaire owner of 98 percent of Lanai, wants to hold the 2017 America's Cup yacht race in Hawaii.
Ellison said he wants the next America's Cup to involve regattas all over the world "leading up to the Louis Vuitton Cup, and the main event, the America's Cup, likely taking place in Honolulu," according to the newspaper."

Well that should be fun! The new America's Cup is a lot more fun now that they have the multi-hulls and go a lot faster. Maybe they can have an "around the state race" as part of America's Cup. Kinda see if the boats are a bit more seaworthy than they seem. Add a bit of Whitbread to the America's Cup as it were.
Location: not sure, but there's a hell of a lot of water around here!

Wonder if all that hi-tech carbon and kevlar could handle the Kaiwi and Alenuihaha, especially if a Kona were developing. They'd probably get chewed to the bone, swallowed, and spit out somewhere off Kona. Would be great fun to watch.. I've paddled the Kaiwi before, and it's some nasty ocean, when it wants to be.

Interesting, when i heard the news. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens, and how the project proceeds. Would be nice. I remember what happened in the 1990's when it was proposed, and all the propaganda photos against Ke'ehi lagoon, and the Derelict boats, the other cities used against Hawaii. Hope it doesn’t happen again. I would like to see it happen.

I followed the races pretty closely while they were here in San Francisco and all I can say about those boats is "Wow!" They are amazingly fast (42+ knots, 50+ mph). I'm not sure how well the speed translaed on TV, but watching the little motorized speed boats trying to keep up with them was something.
As for how seaworthy they are, I'm not so sure. They had some wrecks, one of which resulted in the death of one of the sailors and imposed very strict maximum wind limits. when those limits were exceeded, they wouldn't race. And this was all inside the bay. Not sure how they'd perform in high winds in the open ocean.
They will probably have to redesign the boats, that will keep them busy for awhile. May not be able to go as fast, though, because of the harsher conditions.
Oh yeah, they did clean up Keehi Lagoon a lot, didn't they? And then the tsunami ate the docks. Keehi isn't big enough to hold a big sailboat race in, which is unfortunate since it's some of the only protected water in the state. Well, there's Pearl Harbor, too, but I don't see a big boat race there, either. Between Maui and Lanai should do well, it's sorta semi protected and they wouldn't have to cross the alenuihaha.
