Road was blocked yesterday by neighbors fallen avocado tree and a couple ohias. Wind has died down some, just gusts now, hard hammering rain, some thunder at 11;30 PM. Satellite is out. Got buckets under the new leaks that happen only in these major storms, good time to crawl under the covers.

Glad everyone posting is ok so far...

I agree with Leilaniguy--a good time to be in my warm, dry house. Passed on a Christmas get-together tonight that would have required another drive to Volcano, which I just did yesterday in the rain. I'd rather be home listening to the band recording downstairs and catching up on work.

Hope everyone stays safe and warm!

Take a look at this article:

Hawaii Tribune-Herald :: Hilo, Hawaii (http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/articles/2007/12/08/local_news/local01.txt - broken link)

Brian Murphy, 67, is somewhere up here and, rescuers hope, alive.

....(he) parked his car at the Mauna Kea Visitor Information Station, at the 9,200-foot elevation, around noon Wednesday.

He entered the building and spoke to an employee about going about a mile up the Humuula Trail, an old footpath that climbs about 3,800 feet up the mountain, up to Lake Waiau at 13,020 feet.....

.....Two hours later, a cold front made landfall from the northwest, after wreaking havoc on Kauai, Oahu and Maui. As it passed over Mauna Kea, it dropped about a foot of snow on the summit and created blizzard conditions, with winds of up to 70 mph. The summit was closed Wednesday as a result.....

(Note the last line in the article. Think the reporter is implying something?)

I just saw the article this morning...and the photos in the article are certainly beautiful. This is just another reminder that nature in all its glory still deserves our respect and even a little bit of healthy fear!
