"Roughly 98 percent of Hawaii public school teachers were rated as either highly effective or effective in their jobs for the 2013-14 academic year, under the state's newly implemented teacher evaluation system, according to data released Tuesday."
Just an anecdote, but our daughters, who have only been attending high school here for three weeks, have found it more demanding than their school(s) back in Portland, especially our daughter that's a junior. The HS school she previously attended was nationally recognized, had IB, AP, Honors courses, etc. She thought (hoped?) it would be easier here but says it's more difficult, and her teachers seem to have higher expectations.
The only break our oldest said she has gotten was the day there was a sub in their modern Hawaiian history class and he played the ukelele for most of the class.

Information they can use! I love it!

Apparently all the songs were in Hawaiian, and the students were repeatedly asked which words they understood.
No one in the class understood any of them. Don't know if that's because no one in the class understands Hawaiian, or because his singing was unintelligible.
You really want to know what the problem with Hawai'i public education is? Its living in the tropics period.
The problem is the majority of public school parents don't give a crap. It becomes a self-perpetuating cycle.
The overwhelming majority of talented students end up in private schools.
