I think it's because they use mainland parameters of how to live that it tops the list. Most of the folks who live here live on a whole lot less. After all, they have to since most salaries are less than their mainland counterparts.

The wealthy Californians and Chinese buying up real estate and driving up COL don't seem to be living on less!

The real estate they are buying is already way out of your price range.

Foreign homeownership represents less than 5% of the total real estate market in Hawaii - The Japanese still dominate with over 50% of the ownership, followed by Canada - the Chinese represent only about 5% of those buyers.

Hawai'i has also retained its top position in this important category...

But there are deer to hit in Hawaii. I almost hit a couple on Molokai and one on Lanai. The first one really shocked me because while I live in an area thats has LOTS of deer and dodging them on the roads is common, I didn't expect it in Hawaii.

Was driving the Elise through Wailea a few years back. Friggin deer jumper OVER my car right across from the Makena Surf. Only time I was ever thankful to be driving a clown car that is 44 inches tall at the cockpit.

And, it was FAST. 0-60, 3.8 seconds. PERFECT for Kihei Road
