Hello friends, I am seeking information about Hawaii. I am a well educated European (Dutch) who is making a potential move to the US. I already have my credentials in order and Hawaii will not be my destination. But I am very interested in Hawaii for a future vacation or even a future move if I play my cards right as they say. From what I understand it is a very diverse set of islands, but most poeople are centered on one island (Oahu). Just how big is Honololulu? Is there pollution? What is the culture of Hawaii? IS the population open to outsiders? Thank you very much in advance for your responses!

If you are interested in a vacation, you should try many of the travel sites first which will have detailed information on what to do. Then you can ask specific questions on here.

I think that one of the nicest introductions you can get to the state, and to the individual islands, is the official Hawai'i tourism guide...

With your professional background you should move to Silicon Valley. You can travel from there everywhere else pretty easily. Nature in terms of ocean and mountains are easily to get to on the weekends. Hawaii is not right for you at such a young age, neither are Maryland, PA, or Canada.

You need sun & money & get away from the rest of the Dutch, it seems. You also need to find a corporate sponsor/employer for getting a work visa and few are experienced in this but the large companies. Do not expect to find a 'made bed' in terms of housing, public transportation, parking, unionized benefits, socialized medicine or even clean streets.

And if it doesn't work out you can go back to the 'dams or anywhere else in Europe after a year or two and claim USA experience on your resume. Will catapult your salary a few digits over there.

Tourism is our main industry, of course we love "outsiders"! Oahu is crowded but many beautiful things to see and do. Each island has it's own charm. Come to Kona, it's the best! (I'm a little prejudiced)
