Sorry, if you study the history of Hawai'i, it's not that simple at all. The culture and tradition of paying low salaries in Hawai'i was established by the power elite long before Hawai'i's population was dense.

Yeah. Of course the salaries have nothing to do with one of the highest costs of doing business in the nation.

Makes you wonder why businesses aren't trippin all over themselves to relocate to Hawaii and do business here with so much cheap labor (although Hawaii somehow manages some of the highest percentage residents who are millionaires. (And where over 1/3 of the workforce makes six figures). It worked so well for the ag industry after all.

Please try to remember that we are the most isolated island chain in the world. Unlike the continental unitted states if you experience a bad job market or poor wages you can just fill up your gas tank with gas and goto another state or area. That isn't the case here. Further, because Hawai'i is one state in our union its easy to assume that we will be exactly like the rest of the continental unitted states in action and deed etc. Which is false, we are part of the unitted states but we are different in alot of ways. Anyway low wages that haven't caught up with the cost of living is one example and reason the cost of housing is so high.

Please don't make supply & demand another rationalization or justification for bad behavior.

@Air Start anyway Aloha and Welcome to CDF Hawai'i.

@OpenD

Your assessment of hawaii history and labor + pay is correct. Hawai'i has a history paintted with tons of classism.
