What did the Pacific Sugar Mill at the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island import in 1883 to try to get rid of the rats that were damaging the sugarcane and why didn't it work?
Spoiler
They imported 72 Asian Mongoose from Jamaica and the reason the mongoose didn't solve the rat problem is because Asian Mongooses were/are diurnal and the rats nocturnal. The same mongooses were shipped to Molokai, Maui, and Oahu.
The mongooses ended up eating ground birds and their eggs. There is debate as to whether or not the mongoose have/had any effect on the rat population. Now days the mongoose number in the thousands and Kauai had it's first documented mongoose capture in May of 2012.
The Mongoose was also used in getting rid of the snakes on the Islands brought over by the Queen

Got any references for that? I've never heard that before, and I can't find any confirmation that the Queen ever did that.
Today, of course, snakes are strictly forbidden, because of fears the could become invasive and damage the environment, and it's a C Class felony to import them or possess them.
How wide is Honolulu County? Go ahead, take a guess... you might be surprised.
Spoiler
About 1,500 miles, making it the widest county in the nation. Under the Hawai'i State constitution islands which are not specifically enumerated as part of one of the other 4 counties... Maui, Kaua'i, Hawai'i, or Kalawao, are considered part of Honolulu, and the entire archipelago of 132 islands is about 1,500 miles in total width.
Hawai'i County, aka the Island of Hawai'i, aka The Big Island, accounts for 62% of the total land area of the State.
How many islands are there in Hawai'i County?
Spoiler
Officially? 27. One huge one, the biggest island in the United States, and 26 much smaller ones around its perimeter.
Look at a good detailed map and trace the outline of the Big Island and you can count hundreds of small islets and reefs, but only 26 fit the full definition.
5! Kaua'i, Honolulu (city and county), Maui, Hawaii, and Kalawao (Kalaupapa leper colony on Molokai island administered by the dept of health).
That one shocked me enough to double check...... I had no idea about Kalawao, and I've been there.
