HNL to Phoenix is cheap and since its summer, hotel rooms & rental cars are cheap. I rented a car 2 weeks ago in Phoenix for $9.50 a day from Hertz. Of course its a little warm....
Probably one of those Vegas package deals would be as cheap as it gets. When we moved from Hilo to Tucson years ago, it was cheaper to fly to Vegas. For our package, we got R/T tickets (which we didn't need), 3 nights in a downtown hotel, and some drink and food comps. Then we flew into Phoenix, and from there took a shuttle to Tucson. This was cheaper than just flying from Hilo to Tucson one way, and we got to see some stuff on the trip. This was July, and even the inside of the Phoenix airport was like an oven.
The strangest thing was when we checked into the hotel in Vegas, the guy giving us our comp tickets was a local Portuguese guy I knew from my old job back on the Big Island at Kama'aina Motors! Seems a fair number of Hawaii ex pats live in Vegas. Why, I haven't a clue, but they're apparently there.
