I had a border collie as a kid that was the smartest dog ever. we lived on 5 acres with horses if they ever got out she would round them up and put them back in the stalls. would love to have one now but I think they have more energy than I have these days. I couldn't keep up with them.

Yeah. He did not consider himself "rescued" that day.

She just decided to start sitting in the pot one day. Next day she was out and never did it again. I will never understand the way Border Collies think. So intelligent but so idiosyncratic.

They do seem to be rather eccentric. Our's IS trying to train us. He sits down really close and stares at me and waits for me to look at him, then he turns and stares at the dog treat cabinet. Back at me, back at cabinet.......

I found out he actually learned the word butt, just from our conversations (that's his itchy spot). I said "butt" and he turned around and backed into me.

I have question for all the border collie owners: Are your dogs really vocal? Ours seems to have a sound for everything.

I would say yes. Ours had a multitude of sounds she makes, most are oriented to her getting (or trying to get) attention.

Pets are very important to a lot of us. In my Buddhist mind, all sentient beings are on exactly the same level. If your companion/friend/buddy/love of your life happens to have a tail or feathers, it matters not one bit. If that's who you love and who loves you, that's all that matters. The tragedy is that they tend to live much shorter lives, so over time pet companions become very familiar w/ grief and loss. The other side of the coin is that they can help us so much during bad times. My wife used to call our feline friend Nurse Sissy because she had an instinct for when someone needed help. I miss her more than I can say.
