Why does the 2nd kid cost an extra $15,046, but the 3rd kid costs $27,318? Doesn't the marginal cost of having kids usually decrease?

Maybe the more kids you have, the louder they get and the more you are willing to spend on crap to shut them up so that you can have a minute or two peace!

Maybe it has to do with bedrooms... A 3 bedroom is expensive but a 4 bedroom is astronomically expensive

According to the study's methodology The Economic Policy Institute’s 2015 Family Budget Calculator: Technical Documentation | Economic Policy Institute they use rents in the area. (studio for 1 person, 1 bedroom apartment for couple etc.)

Also worth noting, it calculated gross income needed, and then accounts for taxes.
