In addition to plane fare, the process will cost around $1,000.
Australia is also a rabies free island, and pets coming from there are exempt from quarantine.

Even coming from the mainland, $1,000 seems quite high. With the direct release program, it's probably less than $500. If they do have to be quarantined it does run over $1,000.

Thanks for the clarification. I used to hang out with some friends that were immigrants, they used to discuss the whole visa thing, how to get citizenship, etc etc among themselves quite a bit so I sorta know what's out there, but not really the specifics.

Good point about Australia.

Regarding the costs, I didn't do the process myself (we have a rescue dog we picked up here) but have heard others say that this is what they ended up paying.

More misinformation on Visas

The E-3 visa is reserved for highly specialized occupations and is employer sponsored.

So - working at the front desk at the Hilton is out and so is that highly coveted cashier position at Safeway.

The dog could get to Hawaii without quarantine, but I don't think it can go back to Australia afterwards? Before bringing the dog, check to see if it can get back to Australia if necessary.

There's jobs in Hawaii, but jobs that provide a living wage are pretty few and far between. Unless, of course, you share housing and live in a small space, ride the bus, etc. etc.
