here's how I rank them. I've pretty much been to all of them in all islands.

1. Kailua Beach (Oahu)
2. Manini'owali Beach (Big Island)
3. Hapuna Beach (Big Island)
4. Makena Beach (Maui)
5. Keawaula Beach (Oahu)

Depends on what you want the beach for. If you want bodysurfing, my favorite is Makapu'u on Oahu. For just a quiet day at the beach, 69's over near Puako is pretty nice (another Hawaii Island beach). For watching folks, it's hard to beat Waikiki or Sans Souci. Fine white sand, Lanikai. For big surf, there's several to select from on North Shore, Oahu. For watching kite surfers, either Diamond Head or Kailua on Oahu. Hanalei on Kauai is a nice beach, too, especially if you want to moor a boat offshore in the summer.

My "top 5" beaches are all on the island I live, and all off the beaten path.
My favorite though is likely Pohue. Can go there a dozen times and never see another soul.
Bar code cars can't make the drive, and most people don't even want to make the walk.

"bar code cars", eh? Never heard 'em called that before, but it's a good one! They show up a lot of places they aren't supposed to, though. Once in awhile they get into Waipio Valley, but then they usually have to be towed out. That beach isn't on my list because it's too hard to get to and the horses will push the top off of your cooler and eat your lunch if you're not paying attention.

My favorite is Makalawena, but I'd rather not recommend it because I like it the way it is -- uncrowded!

1. Beach in my neighborhood.
2. Beach where I haven't seen a testosterone fueled fight brewing.
3. Beach with bathroom that isn't scary.
4. Beach without 75 pop up tents.
5. Beach with parking spots you don't have to hunt for.
