I hear the volcano is acting up a little more than normal? Any new info or sites to check out with updated info? Thanks.

Check out the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park website at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park - Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park (U.S. National Park Service) for lots of great information, including maps of the recent flow. Also, the volcano observatory at www.volcano.wr.usgs.gov (broken link) has an updated status report. Click on "images" for some fantastic pictures.

Yesterday they opened a new viewing area called the Kalapana Safe Viewing Program. It's at the end of Highway 130 and opens to the public at 2:00 p.m. with the last entry at 8:00 p.m. (they let people stay until 10:00).

There's more than one volcano in Hawai'i. Kilauea has a little new activity that's drawing hordes of tourists; however, it's not "acting up," it's just doing what active volcanoes occasionally do.

Just imagine what the headline would have been if the trail had been entirely cut off after all the tourists were on the wrong side of the cut-off!

Well in 1984 we rode around the volcano........up to the mountain and then in the lodge for a brief bit. There were some people in the lodge.
But.......as we drove around not a soul in site. Just us and the volcano.
When we got home we heard about a big eruption.......it was the first in a long long while. ( two weeks after we were there)
I always tell everyone that no one would have known we were missing.....we hadn't told anyone what we were up to.
Having that happen so near when we were driving around there always gives me goosebumps!
