I've lived in Honolulu for multiple summers but that was over a decade ago. Not sure if it's true, but I've heard that drugs, homelessness and crime have unfortunately increased since then. I've also heard that public schools are horrible.
I may consider going back for a period of time but have two kids - 1 and 4. Where would say you are the best family friendly communities in Hawaii and how do they compare to some of the top places in the mainland?

Stop considering. It's just a disaster waiting to happen. Wait until your kids are over 18. Don't put them in a bad spot they can't control.
How would we know what the top places are in the mainland? We'd only be able to do the same computer searches you'd be able to do. We could tell you about places in Hawaii, but how are we supposed to keep track of mainland places?
How about which island? Oahu with Honolulu? And what economic level? There's always private schools such as Punahou.

I was guessing some people have lived on or at least visited the mainland, but not a big deal if not. Was just wondering what it's like raising a young family in Hawaii. Would want annual expenses to be around $100k. Wouldn't need a fancy or big place to live, but would want a nice location and decent schools. Wouldn't want to want to pay $20k x 2 for private schools.

If I were moving with a young family I'd put Hawaii Kai and Kailua on my list of places to consider.

Thanks all. I'm thinking trying to take extended 1 month trips there could be better. Toughest thing though would be I'd want to go in the winter so would need to pull the kids from school. Shorter trips to the Florida Keys is fun too, but not the same
Extended trips mean you have mainland earning power and will be able to have enough money to have fun while you're visiting Hawaii instead of trying to struggle to make ends meet on a day to day basis. It also means you'll be able to pick a different area or different island each time and see more of Hawaii than the folks who live here see.
What with Hurricane Irma, it's gonna be awhile before the Keys are back together again, I'd expect. Although someone did rescue some of the roosters, so they'll probably be back.
My sister in Law in Islamorada had to leave behind her beloved old c o c k , ( yes, you read it right) Ernest 'papa'Hemingway XII last week.
fingers crossed he will be there upon her return.
