I just arrived in Honolulu yesterday and I'm shopping around for a cheap (<$1000) car until I can get my main car shipped over. I see plenty of cars on craigslist in that price range, is there anything I should be wary of or looking for? I know if the registration or safety is expired, that can be expensive.

How’s the vehicle registration and transfer taxes?

Wondering if cheaper to rent something rather than sink money into a beater.

You need to do the same due diligence in Hawaii as any other place.

Maybe a bus pass until your car gets there? Then you can use the money you save to ship over your car. Do you have a place to park it if you get one?

Should only be a week or so for your car to get here, it will be cheaper to rent something.

Hawaii is unique in that if the past owner didn't pay registration taxes, the new owner has to pay them. A <$1000 car may have more than $1000 past-due taxes on it.

If the safety isn't current, it may cost more than $1000 to get it up to snuff.

A <$1000 car may wind up costing you $3000 to buy it and make it legal, a $3000 car might be legal right off the bat. Due diligence can't be reiterated enough times. Just because the car has a valid looking safety sticker on it, doesn't mean it's legitimate. You'll want to check with the "dmv" for current safety and taxes on anything you buy.

Another common trick here is owners misrepresenting the year to inflate the value. Almost every CL car I looked at was listed as being 2 years newer than it actually was. Only one of them had a valid registration, safety, title, and was the actual age it was listed at. I walked away from several deals.

This is the best and most honest used car dealer in Honolulu according to 96% of the Locals in a recent poll. Good luck with whatever decision you end up with.
