The title of the thread pretty much says it all. Due to the coronavirus, the Merry Monarch hula festival in Hilo is cancelled.

This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, festival on our island and it won't be happening because of the virus. Probably better to be safe than sorry, though, since a lot of kapuna attend the festival and if it did happen, everyone would want to go and support their ohana.

They had no choice - you can't cancel all UH sports, St. Patricks Day festivities, MLB, NBA, NHL, and PGA, Coachella, South by Southwest - etc and keep this going....

Good news! Bad news would be going ahead with it like nothing happened, then getting everyone infected, then heading off back to the other islands!

I was hoping they would be able to somehow have it as just the televised version. Without the audience, there would be enough space in the Edith Kanakaole stadium to keep the dance troupes separate from each other and a lot of hula is danced fairly far away from each other. But, the festival is more than just the competition itself, there are all sorts of events that go along with it so it would be a very bare bones if it were just the video part.

Too bad they couldn't send a videographer around to each hula studio to record their dances and then edit them all together. It wouldn't be the same, but there's way more people who view it on TV than see it in person.
