Just a follow up: San Diego schools that recently reopened were forced to close again 2 days later with 81 students and 18 staff members now under quarantine.
Quote: "...recent studies and outbreaks show that schoolchildren, even younger ones, can play a significant role in spreading infections".
Are you talking to yourself?
Anyway, sound like they really have no idea. Anyway, Saint Fauci says otherwise and the data shows schools aren’t spreaders of the virus. Kids have been attending private schools in person along with many public schools throughout the US and the data doesn’t point to schools being vulnerable to spreading covid.
I’m wondering since you’re in the system, does Hawaii have any intentions of at least opening up this fall? We were talking to a friend of ours who teaches a core subject and this person states they only have two students in their class once a week. This person also told us when positions are cut due to lack of funding, the unqualified teacher my wife interviewed for the position of will be on the chopping block.

Not everyone can easily afford a 13.8% pay cut - especially teachers. .
Then they should have thought about their career choice when a job that requires a degree only pays $60,000 in a HCOL area. Probably their part time job pays more so their income will actually go up! Not trying to beat up on teachers but I keep hearing that Hawaii is union strong but it doesn't seem to be based on their wages and retirement packages. What would happen if all 13,000 of them refused to take crumbs. Are 13,000 teachers going to relocate from the mainland?
Hawaii can afford to pay a living wage but why would they if they have cheap labor?

Lame response. How does anyone make any career choices and foresee every possibility that could occur in their future?
On both U.S. coasts, many school districts now top out at over $100,000 for teachers. Hawaii needs to step up it's game or continue to settle for mediocrity.
Teacher Unions are only powerful in the minds of malcontents. Generally they have little actual power.

What unseen "possibility" has happened over the last 20 years for teacher employment in Hawaii? I have to think Blockbuster and Photo Hut saw the writing on the wall in advance.
Why aren't Hawaii teacher unions more powerful? Because lazy teachers don't understand that THEY are the union. So you think the national guard is gonna force teachers to teach if they walk off the job or realize the Cheesecake Factory pays more? I say the teachers have a lot of power if just in numbers. I think 13,000 votes could move a lot of elections.
So quit the name calling and either throw up your hands or offer some solutions.
See, if you were a teacher I'd accuse you of playing the lame/blame game. You did not offer one solution. Geez, a lot of people had bumps in their chosen careers but it has happened throughout the decades. The distinction I would make is that they insisted on being paid fairly to begin with. Also they did not get a pay cut. The were making the same low wage but had their hours reduced. You don't have to be a math teacher to understand that!
I'll amend my statement to include most union members don't understand that they are the union. Doesn't make teachers any smarter or less lazy!
I guess I confused your calling my response lame as calling me lame.
Surely you can come up with some idiotic solution instead of ............hell, I have no idea what you are trying to accomplish. But I'll pass you for showing up.

I am not obligated to offer a "solution" for you to pick apart. Perhaps the guy on the Big Island would like to discuss it with you.
I am simply happy that the Governor has rescinded the furloughs and/or pay cuts for now. A lot of public employees are depending on those paychecks.

Who is "Hawaii"? Politicians? they seem to be well compensated and are reelected by "Hawaii"! Unions? Actual teachers? Voters?
Or are you saying the voters can't do it or the unions can't do it or the teachers can't do it? Now I would put it on the voters but it is the teachers that need to initiate this and probably best through their unions. Just saying. Maybe you think that is lame.
The one thing I don’t get is why open positions are not posted here in Hawaii.
HSTA is strong enough to keep the students out of school, but they are really weak when it comes to teacher salary bargaining. My wife will make more money in Georgia than Hawaii and there is no collective bargaining for teachers in Georgia.
