That’s a pipe dream. Will never happen. They are exactly where the government wants them, dependent upon them. The more people are dependent on the government the more powerful the government becomes. They will just print more money making it less valuable and they become even more powerful. The ruling elite does not care if the system comes crashing down, they have all insulated themselves.
The government will always pump money to the teachers unions. That’s too much a major voting block to ignore and a great place for children to be indoctrinated.

In Hawaii more people work for the Local, County, State & Federal Governments than work in Tourism. But without the taxes associated with the tourist industry, how do you expect the Local, County & State governments to come up with the money to pay their already overpaid workers?

I wouldn’t think state workers are over paid in Hawaii in comparison to cost of living, but Because Hawaii chose to make it impossible for tourism and in fact celebrated it, states that didn’t shut down their economies shouldn’t be on the hook bailing out those states like Hawaii. This is what will happen. States that made poor decisions through this virus will get a bail out.

How much less would be a fair wage? Most government workers here already earn wages that put them below the poverty line and must be pooled with the wages of other family members for survival.
I would agree that more efficiency would be desirable. Govt. workers here don't seem to receive any job cross-training. When someone in an organization goes on a leave of absence, their work just piles up until they return.
Whose being laid off? The XL pipeline workers? Not quite as big a union and voting block as the NEA and AFT.

Hawaii teachers who are tenured will not be getting laid off. Those teachers who are not tenured and are not certified may be another story. No tenured unionized teacher here will get laid off. Do you think we are being governed in Hawaii? Seems you’re offended by this word “ruled?” You don’t believe we are? Let me ask you, do the same rules apply to them (especially those in DC) as they do to us regular people?

Well - no. Although as a percentage of population - Hawaii has about double the population in the Public Sector (9% of the working population in Hawaii vs 4.5% on the mainland) it still pales in comparison to tourism which in normal times is roughly 15% of the working population.
