Way to pick stories ... Japan has long had 2nd highest suicide rate in Asia (after S. Korea .... which country hasn’t leaped in Covid era suicides). 30th highest in the world, and when you look at which countries are worse you don’t wonder at the others (Guyana, Lesotho, Russia, et al ...dismal places).

So yes, Covid stressors affect mental / emotional health. Who couldn’t guess ... And who knows how equal stress might be without lockdowns? The amount of illness and fatalities given the extraordinary infectiousness would have an also terrible impact on business and pervasive social fear keeping people voluntarily shut-in.

It’s just a miserable event. Sh*t happens. History says so.

Looking forward ...

One major hotel has had over 10,500 room days cancelled from test in hand rule.

Story on HPR this AM said there have been 10,000 cancellations of travel since Tzar Ige
decided to tighten up testing parameters without discussing it with anyone else.
This, despite that every single COVID metric has dropped since mid October when Safe Travels began allowing testing option to quarantine.

It sounds like the current rules for Hawaii travel are about to change again.

Speculation is that either there will be pre-test and arrival test or perhaps a 7-day quarantine no matter what your results are.

https://beatofhawaii.com/second-test...anges-imminent

With California going back into lockdown, it's probably inevitable.

A decision is expected in the next couple of days.

I don't mind a second test. I suspect logistically that will be a challenge for visitors.

A mandatory 7 day quarantine would be loony

Regarding herd Immunity, here it is:

“Youyang Gu now has new projections on the path to herd immunity: https://covid19-projections.com/path-to-herd-immunity/

"We believe COVID-19 herd immunity (>60% of population immune) will be reached in the US during summer 2021 (Jul-Sep 2021).

At the time herd immunity is reached, roughly half of the immunity will be achieved through natural infection, and the other half will be achieved through vaccination.

New infections may become minimal before herd immunity is reached (Jun-Aug 2021). But due to imported cases and localized clusters, it is unlikely that new infections will drop to zero until 2022.

Deaths may drop to low levels even earlier (May-Jul 2021), in part due to a vaccine distribution strategy that initially prioritizes high-risk individuals. Once deaths fall to minimal levels, we may begin seeing a relaxation of restrictions.

Summarizing the above findings, our best estimate of a complete “return to normal” in the US is mid-summer 2021 (Jun-Aug 2021).

We estimate around one-third of the US population (~110 million) will have been infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus by the end of 2021. That is an additional 40 million infections since mid-December 2020.

This translates to a final US COVID-19 death toll of roughly 500,000 (+/-100k) reported deaths, or ~200,000 additional deaths since mid-December 2020."

Dollies Sports Bar in Kahana closed Tuesday after a Covid-19 outbreak. I was in there that day but just long enough to pick up a pizza. Fingers crossed.
