Hawaii will suffer high unemployment rate for a long while whether tourism is limited or not. If Hawaii tries to open like Florida and other states and has a full blown epidemic, you don't think tourism would get crushed that way? The ONLY reason some people are clamoring to come to hawaii is the low case load. What if the cases were highest in the nation, what then?

"This ain't the mainland", hawaii has very limited number of ER and hospital beds, most the hospitals on the outer islands are actually clinics, whose patients need to be flown to Oahu or the mainland for anything serious. For covid, I doubt they'll be flying patients out to other states, or is yours volunteering?

80,000 US CV19 fatalities. Couple weeks back another poster predicted we’d likely not hit even 50,000. I responded a week later when we hit 60,000. About another week after that whtviper pulled up the old post again when we hit 70,000. Now, 80,000 and still climbing.

I should have said it more clearly. And we went 70,000 to 80,000 deaths in 5 days.

We already know what will happen if we open, we will start the long road to recovery. We already know what did happen after the shutdown, 40% unemployment, food lines several miles long, bankruptcies and economic collapse.
New infections peaked 10 days before all of the shutdown orders, social distancing, masks and quarantines.

Well, I got that ... because I’ve been following the progression.

Look at the numbers for a typical year and keep it in perspective. We are all going to die eventually. The point is to live while were here. Living in fear is no way to live.

Total number of deaths in US 2017: 2,813,503
Heart disease: 647,457
Cancer: 599,108
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
Diabetes: 83,564
Influenza and Pneumonia: 55,672
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome and nephrosis: 50,633
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't following that closely. I skimmed through back pages trying to see what you guys were taling about.

Over the next few weeks - quite a bit of the local economy will be opening and my money is stay at home is lifted May 31, perhaps even earlier. I've got a haircut appointment June 1 and it may happen sooner.

There isn't any scenario or reason for Hawaii to open to tourism while the US West Coast is still under stay at home. I foresee Vegas casinos opening June 1 at the latest - California sometime thereafter - and I suspect tourists will begin trickling in to Hawaii sometime this summer.

And I won't be shocked if we get hammered this Fall/Winter and repeat the Stay at Home cycle unless a treatment or vaccine is out.

There will be a lot of locals traveling to mainland after stay at home is lifted. A few already are, for sure.

One question for those worried about spread of covid 19 returning will be if these travelers adhere to 14 day quarantine after returning to the islands. Residents were the primary source of coronavirus entering the state initially and will also be in the future.

Once stay at home is lifted - I suspect resident quarantine is lifted. When the West Coast and Nevada opens - we won't be far behind despite political rhetoric. I think it is more a question if Wave 2 is bad and we repeat the cycle.
