Since many people visit this forum who are not from Hawaii and looking for a Hawaii vacation Oct 15 onward when the Pre-Travel program begins to allow you to not quarantine with a negative test 72 hours before arrival - the Big Island has opted out of that program - you must quarantine regardless if you take a test
Mainland visitors arriving on Hawaii Island will not be able to participate in the state’s pre-travel testing program when it launches on October 15 and will have to continue to quarantine for 14 days, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser
Gov. David Ige reportedly gave each county a chance to opt out of the state’s travel plans on Monday. Hawaii County is believed to have been the only one to do so.
While I don't wish further economic harm on the Big Island, it'll be interesting to see how long its position lasts as the other islands start to slowly recover.

It should be interesting to see.... note that big island lagged the other islands recovery during the great recession. Anyways, Oahu is more than willing to take whatever tourists the big island gives up!
imagine the egg on iggys face if ALL the mayors pull out of his plan.
Caldwell is going to want to run for Governor - and he'll be going against Green. I don't see him pulling out t this point unless Ige forces him to do so.
I’ve wondered about this also. You test on arrival and find someone positive. You can’t really let them get back on a plane and fly home. Do you also quarantine their travel companions for exposure ? It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
The common sense thing to do, whether a tourist or resident, interisland or mainland traveler is to quarantine in place once you test positive. You do not decide to take a plane flight back immediately gambling that the temperature sensors or random quick test doesn't get you.
Of course the other common sense thing is for the governor to spell out the guidelines, for the counties to have quarantine hotels ready, etc. BUT doing things in a not well thought out manner is status quo for the government, as is procrastinating and trying to make last minute changes. Literally 1 week before the program is to start, the mayors are raising concerns? A honolulu city council person did the same thing. Guess everyone was thinking "kick the can down the road ige" wasn't serious. Somewhat understandable, I guess.
