Bumping up 1,000 teacher layoffs to 1,300

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2021/0...t-by-end-year/

The state Department of Education is expecting a budget cut of $400 million and officials warn that could mean 1,300 teaching positions could be cut.

“I don’t mince words about our budget, we are in crisis when it comes to the school system,” said Schools Superintendent Christina Kishimoto. “We have been talking about furloughs, but behind the furloughs are the potential of a significant reduction in force.”

The 1,300 represents 10% of the 13,000 teaching positions statewide.

That’s why we have to leave. Sold our house and in a rental till our daughter finishes up the spring semester. It sucks we have to leave, but have to go where the work is.

It’s February tomorrow and students are still not back in school and yet these government workers continue to collect a check.

I've subbed once or twice a week for the past several weeks. All of the teachers are at the school sites each day teaching online. Many also have in-class students in limited numbers. (I have had students present every day I've worked.)

Should they NOT be able to "continue to collect a check" even though they are working?

Or would it be preferable if they were all laid off and sitting at home collecting Unemployment?

Thank you. It’s not that big of a deal. I easily fit in most situations I’m in. I’m pretty adaptable. My wife says that about me all the time. “You easily make friends and are likable. You can get into full conversations with strangers with no problem.”

In the real world, I’m not as I suppose opinionated.
