Southwest is doubling down on its Hawaii strategy adding nonstop flights to all the major islands from Vegas, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Expect Hawaiian to get stung the most and will be interesting to see if/how they respond.
These flights will really benefit residents of the BI and Kauai.
Los Angeles: Daily service to Honolulu and Maui begins June 6, followed by daily flights to Kauai and the island of Hawaii (the "Big Island'') on June 27.
Las Vegas: Daily service to Honolulu begins June 6, followed by Maui on June 27. Flights to Kauai and the island of Hawaii begin in early September.
Phoenix: Daily service to Honolulu and Maui begins June 27, followed by Kauai and the island of Hawaii on Sept. 7.
Freaking love it. Starting airfare for one way trip to/from Vegas is $169. Way cheaper than Hawaiian. Going to take more trips out there with the cheaper prices and being able to avoid California layovers. Especially stoked that they have direct flights to/from Kauai, Maui, BI, too.
I know people who have cancelled their Hawaiian miles credit cards, got the Southwest card, and will never fly Hawaiian again. The memories of extorting us during their monopoly will be long lived.
And, Hawaiian has one of the worst frequent flier programs in the industry. I had to spend 25,000 miles to get from Hilo to Oahu and back (432 miles). I used to fly from Alaska to NYC and back (6,622 miles) on Alaska Air for 25k miles. Hawaiian has cheaper mileage seats, but apparently very few of them on each flight.

In my previous career, knowing I was moving to Hawai'i and that Southwest had plans to survice the islands, I switched to flying Sothwest exclusively and amassed over a million points. I am estimating I will fly free for the next 20 years or so. Southwest may be the "Greyound" of air travel, but their frequent flyer program and miles redemption absolutely rocks.
99% of fliers have no clue about the MAX. And tens of thousands of flights have taken to air since the fix without a single issue.
Southwest won’t fly those planes to Hawaii to lose money.
Right now Southwest offers the option of switching from MAX flights to other flights if they are available so apparently some do know about them. Perhaps you underestimate the flying public?

No. And most airlines dropped change fees also. If most of your flights are MAX it does you no good to have an option to switch. Switch to what?
