I'm graduating with my PhD in May and I decided that I want to travel to celebrate. I have not done so since 2019 and the onset of the pandemic. I really miss the feeling of staying in a nice hotel that has a good bar or restaurant and a walkable downtown with things to do (a zoo, aquarium, live music, etc.)
Hawaii has been on my list for a long time. I was going to visit in 2016 but I ended up going to Canada instead. I will preface by saying I know almost nothing about Hawaii. Does anyone have any recommendations as to where I might enjoy myself?
Here are some pertinent details that might influence your recommendations:
- 33 years old, black, male -- hoping for a hotel/somewhere safe and welcoming. Maybe other singles.
- I want to visit for 5 - 7 days
- Upscale, and preferably with a hotel bar or restaurant.
I'd primarily like to field recommendations for where in Hawaii I should visit. I've heard Mayi is beautiful. I can probably figure out or find a hotel in which I'd like to stay on my own (but I'm open to recommendations).
Thank you for your time.

If you want activities close to a hotel (walkable), Oahu-Waikiki/Honolulu is your best bet.
And your best bet for finding other singles will be Oahu/Waikiki. While plenty of upscale hotels on Oahu - if you have deep pockets you can kick that up several notches on the other islands.
OP, all the islands (including Maui) are beautiful in their own special way. You trip is pretty short, so for your first trip just go to Oahu. That's the island where Honolulu is, and Waikiki is an area in Honolulu.
If you have any military connection or are a history buff, a lot of people like to visit Pearl Harbor. It's also on Oahu.
Thank you for the recommendations. What is the difference (or differences) between Maui and Oahu? Are there volcanoes on any of these islands or things I should be aware of before going? How safe are these islands?...

If this is going to become a research project you'll find much better dedicated vacation websites on the internet.

Thanks! This seems like a pretty popular place (Waikiki).

Oahu has the only city on the 4 major islands, Honolulu. The other islands have towns. Oahu also have towns. The only island with an active volcano is the Big Island. On Oahu you can walk into dormant volcanos such as Diamond Head.
Oahu had bars and nite clubs open to 4am. Because of covid I am not sure what will be open when you come. Even in normal times outer island bars seemed to close 9ish. A lot of things that used to be easy to walk on are now reservation only/desired. If you go to Oahu and want to go to Hanauma Bay or Pearl Harbor you should plan ahead.
