It is what it is. I am fourth generation from the bay area of California. Couldn't afford to buy a house in downtown San Francisco, so moved up to the California foothills.
Same with Hawaii. Can't afford downtown Kailua-Kona? Buy 30 miles south or Puna area. Plenty of folks worldwide can't afford to buy where they have roots. I don't believe there is a reasonable remedy.

Yeah, so on Oahu you should move 20 miles offshore?

If things continue as they are, lower income people will be forced to live on the waters in boats. This is Hawaii's future

What makes me laugh is the "if you can't afford it leave."

Hawaii is a high service industry / tourism employer, all historically low paying jobs. At a certain point if the poor leave, you have no workers for all the low end jobs. Hotel maids will be making $40 an hour. /lol

It's an island, and Oahu has what? 80% of the jobs? No decent public transportation, no ferry from other islands.

Exactly where on the waters of Hawaii can 10s of thousands of people live? I’m thinking you are not familiar with the state’s geography. Keehi Lagoon, Pearl Harbor, and possibly Kaneohe Bay are the only three natural ‘safe’ harbors for on water habitation. Keehi is already somewhat used by some dozens of mostly derelect liveaboards and can’t realistically support much community. Pearl is, of course, military only. Most of Kaneohe is subject to bad weather though semi-secure.

Nope. Hong Kong and Thailand style boat communities are not an option. Sorry.

How many years have people been crying about high housing prices on Oahu? The entire conversation is ridiculous in my opinion - it isn’t any less affordable today than it was 30 years ago.

I wouldn't assume that, I would want to see numbers.

Here you go. References the 1960s as not affordable (actually 1950)

I’ll edit to add those pineapple and sugar cane workers weren’t exactly making the big bucks.

That's not what I meant. /lol

I meant that it is the same level of affordability as 30 years ago.
