We are selling our gourmet coffee shop in Benton Harbor/Saint Joseph Michigan with an art gallery. I also have my real estate office in the same location. All is for sale, and we want to move to Hawaii in August. We would like to know which islands we should consider in order to have the highest odds for success.

With the high cost of living in HI, gourmet coffee may not be a big seller, considering people work several jobs to get by.

Where have you visited and where do you "see a need" in the market? It would seem that your best chance for success -- as experienced business owners/operators -- would be the place(s) here that you're most familiar with and felt "needed" what you have to offer. Both businesses (coffee and real estate) are common and highly competitive throughout the state, so your best chance for success would be relying on your own expertise to find any niche that is currently under-served.

Good luck.

How about a small cafe/coffee shop/bakery in Laupahoehoe? There is a bakery there for sale. Not a lot of customers, though since it is a small area but perhaps if you could pay cash for the place and not have to do more than make monthly expenses and not have a mortgage perhaps you could get by.

Default another coffee shop....

This is probably the last thing Maui needs....Starbucks is here in 4 locations that I know of, ABC stores are everywhere and offer great coffee and then you have all of the gas stations and many small coffee shops scattered about which many are already closing their doors.

Bring over a Target or something for the kids and you'll make a killing.

Just selling coffee, even gourmet, on Maui probably won't pay your bills.

Now what I'd like to see is a coffee shop where we can meet friends and sit and listen to some live music. That's a whole different license, I'm sure.

We have one such place up in Wailuku, but none in South Maui.
