If you want to step back in time in Hawaii by about 25 years, Molokai is the island to visit. I've stayed at both the Pau Hana and the Hotel Molokai, both are nothing fancy, right up from the beach, with very reasonable rates, and good food. The Hilo Hawaiian down on the Bigger Island is also a great kicked back place to stay, just make sure you get a room on the makai side of the building.

Aloha and okolemaluna

I like the Hilo Hawaiian. They have a great seafood buffet on the weekends. Last time I stayed there I ran into my cousins at the buffet.

Hilo Hawaiian is definitely one of my favorites. I like it when kids will climb up onto that concrete sturcture out in the bay, and do cannonballs into the water!!! And that water is friggin cold! Great food, great music on the weekends, fun place to stay. Then, of course, there's always Uncle Billies Hilo Hawaiian Lagoon........................?

Aloha and okolemaluna

The traffic on Maui isn't bad. There's a rush hour before and after work/school but that's about it.
Cars move fast and lights don't last that long.
