I just came back from a Thanksgiving trip to Oahu. We did go to Pearl Harbor as my significant other is a former soldier and he really wanted to see that. But to me, all the luaus and stuff just looked so commercialized. We drove past the Polynesian Cultural Center and it was just too many people. The most fun we had was getting up in the morning, getting in the rental car, and exploring both the east and west coast of the island, as well as the North Shore. The only "touristy" thing we did besides the army stuff was eat at Jamesons by the Sea and then go to the Reef surfing competition. But the rest of the time, just drove to a place we hadn't gone yet, find a place with a shrimp truck or a yummy plate lunch (Surfa Smoovee (spelling wrong I'm sure) in Wainea was one of my favorites and the $2.50 hamburger can't be beat!) and explore all the wonderful beach parks.
I didn't want to come back, the island got me. I know they don't need any more people in tents and that the economy probably can't support new jobs, so I am postponing and saving, but I have never been so happy just doing nothing and enjoying the outside! And, by the way, I live on an island on the beach in Texas but in Hawaii it's magic. I just hope the economy picks up in a few years so there will be a place for me.
