I discovered last night that you can register your cell number and receive text alerts from Civil Defense (Hawaii County).

I registered--and just got my first message: a 3.5 magnitude earthqake near the Volcanoes National Park about an hour ago.

Here's the site, if you are interested (scroll down to the links section): Civil Defense Agency - County of Hawaii (http://www.co.hawaii.hi.us/cd/ - broken link)

That's kinda cool! I tried to give you rep points, but I have to "spread it around"

This is a very cool idea! (And I would've given you rep points if the system had let me.) On Maui, we can get notifications for civil defense (and numerous other county news flashes) by signing up at: http://www.co.maui.hi.us/list.asp. The system looks a little different, but thanks for mentioning this. I distinctly remember sitting at a 50th birthday dinner at La Mer and having one of the guest's father call from Maui to say there was a tsunami warning for the next three hours in Waikiki. Typically Hawaiian (roundabout) way of finding out what was going on 50 feet away from us, but with aloha.

Thanks for the tip!

I'll take some! (just kidding).

Thanks for the link, cynmkolohe. I'll pass it on to my friend on the Big Island. She doesn't come to this site.
