Thanks, Beachbunnies, that's good to know. Official sources are always good.

We have canec here in this house and it's a great ceiling material. It would be a huge hassle to replace it and we'd probably have to add more ceiling supports since drywall is a lot heavier than canec.

Has anyone seen canec in 12" x 12" tiles, though? I think I've only seen it in big 4' x 8' sheets. The OP mentioned 12" square "tiles" so perhaps their ceiling wasn't actually canec.

My place in Waialua had canec and we replaced a couple of panels in the early 'eighties. No problems.

Where did you get the panels from? I could use half a panel to do a bit of repair but I'm not sure if anyone stocks them anymore.

I think we got them from City Mill and I'm not even sure City Mill is still in business(?).

City Mill is on Oahu, though, and I'm on the Big Island. Well, I can ask our local hardware, they've been around forever and maybe they have half a panel somewhere.
