I will be on Big Island January 9-20, hopefully whales will still be there for viewing. Never been blessed with the pleasure of viewing such awesome and graceful creatures.
Last night I saw an adult swimming at the surface, close to the reef, and simultaneous spouting that indicated another whale. Not a lot of activity, displays, etc. (one breach), but just steady easterly swimming at the surface (dorsal fin and top of head exposed.) And the occasional blow. Mother and newborn, do you think? Or mating behavior?

Last weekend saw around 9 pods from the spot in two hours! and lots others from the road towards Hawi...Not many breaches but lots lots of whales, they were everywhere. Saw at least 3 babies and 2 -1yr olds??
yesterday at Kehena a couple of breaches and a pod swimming around friends saw!! Two nights ago one of the neighbors woke up to splashing out front of the houses. I missed that It is so wonderful to see them.. even more of a connection/special this year since I got to see them in Alaska before they left for here!!
Lauleahere&there the blow of babies are much smaller than adult is my experience. No expert but The ones I saw this weekend where almost as small blows as dolphins.. then saw the tails of the little ones swimming along with adults, so small.
If anyone is interested her is a link to volunteer for Whale counting!! Last Saturday of each month! http://hawaiihumpbackwhale.noaa.gov I plan on camping and doing it!
Went on 2 whale watches out of Maalaea, on the Pacific Whale Foundation boats. Plenty of whales out there, and more to come soon.
Saw two babies, one competition pod, and a few singles.
The last trip was glorious, with hardly any waves and a bright sunny day. The boats are only about half full right now, which gives everyone plenty of railing space.
Wow Calico!
I hope the whales can wait till I get out there.
When are you coming out?
February is peak. Feb 20th is the Whale Day Parade and festival down in Kihei. The whales will be here through March, into April and stragglers in May.
On this trip, they came up to the boat, went under, and came up the other side. They went under at about 30 feet away.
There is a law that you cannot approach a humpback closer than 100 yards, whether you are on a boat, board, canoe, anything. If they come closer to you, that's OK, but the boats stop engines and wait until the whales move away.
