I'm going to Hawaii in 2 weeks on vacation.

What is it like to drink Kava? Where can I buy it?

Thanks.

I'm sure someone will be along shortly to relate their personal experience with it. In the meantime, check out Kava - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia this wiki article on kava varieties, preparations, effects and its effects on the liver.

drinking kava is a tradition in the Tongan, Samoan and Fijian culture, there is proper ceremony to follow and it also produces a calming happy effect. I know there is a kava bar on maui not sure if they serve real kava or not. the people I know who drink kava do so observing ritual in a private home.

Which island will you be visiting?

In Hilo: Bay Front Coffee, Kava, & Tea - Hilo, HI

I've tasted their kava, but didn't have my own - didn't want to fall asleep at the movie we were going to see later.

Second the question of which island. Near Waikiki, you can go to the Diamond Head Cove Health Bar (Hawaii Health Bar). While there, you might be able to scratch the butt of the dog from Lost.

Got lost prof?
They (I don't know who) just had a fair where the kava plant was featured. It was on TV and the fillipino guy who hosts the show (the funny one who interviews everyone about food) went around tasting all the different kava drinks. Many people take it quiet seriouly and there is a huge market out there with it. I also saw the piece about the Kava Bar on Maui, I want to go. I would think that it would be the ultimate trip to include a trip to the Maui kava bar if the kava plant interests you (and even if it doesn't). Cheers...

Yeah - Marcus Marcos is the owner and he has a cool dog who is a star. I have video on my phone of his dog doing addition and subtraction. Here's Marcus surfing with his two dogs out at Diamond Head Cove:

They have great Acai Berry Smoothies, some wonderful salads and sandwiches, and, of course, Kava. It's not something that you would drink enough for it to damage your liver. Trying it for the experience isn't going to kill you. I just feel a little more relaxed.

Tell'em I said hi!
