First timer here...I have a Eurovan I need to sell. It has been suggested that I ship it and sell it in Hawaii because of the demand. Any feedback on this idea? I looked on craigslist and found only one. Is the travel, camping, or vacationing difficult with a vehicle like this? It is a pop top version.

Default Eurovan

another question regards the VW Eurovan..It seems that the locals will not be happy to see one of these on the roads for fear that it could encourage the beach bum ???
I was hoping that before selling it - my two daughters and I could spend 3 or 4 weeks sight seeing. We are tough and have done this through Arizona, Nevada, and California. They are teenagers though, so we would need safety. (not hook ups or showers though : > ). Any good or bad feelings on this adventure?

It's popular here because it's quirky and there aren't many of them on the road. Is it worth it to pay $1-1.5K to ship it here for resale...I doubt it.

It's illegal to camp in Hawaii on public property without a permit.

Could it be done yes; would it be safe???

Are you kidding? There are more old VW buses and Eurovans on the Big Island than you can imagine. Most have "interesting" paint schemes.

No, you cannot legally park on a beach and camp, nor can you legally park in a parking lot and do the same. Do people still do it? Yes.

There are lot of them on the Big Island. Just because you don't see any listed on craigslist doesn't mean anything. People hold onto them and generally already have a willing buyer long before they resort to an internet ad. I would venture that many of the people with those vehicles do not have internet access anyway, at least on the Big island.

There isn't anyplace to RV camp in Hawaii, although you can get permits to tent camp at some of the state parks, so I suppose you could camp in the van instead of a tent. No hookups or drainout places, though.

I don't know if you would be able to sell it for more than you'd get for it on the mainland or enough to cover the cost of shipping. Buying a tent and tent camping would be cheaper than shipping the VW camper, wouldn't it?

But then they would need a rental car for 3+ weeks.

Well, that's true, but I got the impression they were moving over here? Would it be worthwhile to ship a vehicle, do all the paperwork to get it here, etc., use it for three weeks and then try to sell it and hopefully end up with a profit? They'd have to have different insurance since their current insurance probably wouldn't work in Hawaii. Registration, safety inspection, etc. Then find a buyer within however many days they were here? I'd think pre-selling it and then letting the buyer take it three weeks after they get it shipped over would be the thing to do.

Aha! That's the ticket! List it on Craigslist with the whole "we want to use it for three weeks in Hawaii before selling it" scheme and find a buyer willing to work with that. If there are several buyers lined up, then ship it, camp in it then sell it.
