Hi All, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can get a supplement if you have a medical advantage plan. Here's the deal. I have a medical advantage plan. Humana PPO, to be exact. I'm starting a new job in August and I am eligible to receive health insurance.

Can I use this insurance as a supplemental insurance, or do I have to switch to regular Medicare in order to use a supplemental. Also if I need to switch, will I have to wait for open enrollment to switch.

I know I could probably google my questions or call Medicare but my choice was to ask here first before I venture to find the answers on the web.

Any info you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

1. What you have is a situation called "Secondary Payer". Supplement normally refers to a Medigap plan.

2. You cannot be sold a Medigap if you have a Part C Advantage insurer.

3. Whether your Advantage plan pays first on a claim, or your group plan does, depends on your Advantage plans rules, and the number of employee's in the group plan.

4. The Medicare website has info on Secondary Payer if "Original" Medicare + a group plan is involved, but no info if Original Medicare is replaced by an Advantage plan.

5. See https://www.medicare.gov/supplements...ther-insurance for some background info.

6. You should call your Advantage plan and ask them how they deal with a Secondary Payer.

You also nee to have the details of the employer health plan. When you're medicare eligible, the employer's options for you are expanded to include a subsidized advantage or medigap plan. In those cases, they are considered the same as regular medicare plan types.
