I was thinking about taking a trip over to Europe since flights are so cheap with all of the coronavirus stuff going on. My health insurance won't cover me when I'm abroad, and I was looking into some different international health insurance policies. They seem like they're pretty cheap for someone my age that's healthy - my gut tells me it's a no brainer - but I wanted to get everyone's thoughts on their experience with having a plan and if they've had any experiences where they didn't have a policy and it ended up being a huge headache.
These are the sites I was looking at to compare plans on - seems like most of them are using the same carriers:
I think you are supposed to quarantine when you arrive, so what is the point, unless you can go for months? When I google it says Europe is not allowing Americans in. Best to wait for calmer days.
I have used World Nomads when travelling to Asia. I chose them because they have higher limits for medical expenses and medical evacuation. I tried going to their website, and it's not working right now.
Get a copy of the policy. Read and understand all the exclusions, exemptions and limitations on the policy you will be purchasing. Many polices change over the years (even monthly) based on current events, so make sure you are reading the policy being issued now.
I've used insuremytrip.com, which offers coverage from multiple companies and lets you compare them easily. My priorities: buy coverage that's primary so they pay the provider immediately instead of requiring you to run it through your US-based insurer, and get good evacuation coverage. Last December a friend had to fly to St. Kitts because his brother had a stroke while on a cruise. They brought him to a hospital that was clean and gave him 3 meals a day and that was about it- no TV, no radio, no Wi-Fi, no towels (family is supposed to bring them!) and no physical therapy. He could not have made it home alone- needed a wheel chair and is still having problems with reading 8 months later. NOTHING related to COVID-19 will be covered.
I had travel insurance (broader than just health coverage) when I went to South America in March and was hoping that it would cover a flight I'd booked to go home early after the tour was cut short. I was going to fly home through Colombia but they closed their borders, even to transiting passengers, after I booked the flights. Nope. Government actions not covered.
