Chicago gets cold this time of year. Tonight it is about 18 degrees and I don't know if it's safe to run outside (not worried about ice). Will it be harder on my joints? Lungs? I normally do about 3 or 4 miles. Unfortunately I don't have a treadmill and I don't think an exercise bike, which I do have, will have the same effect. Ideas? Comments? Thanks.
Its absolutely safe to run in the cold as long as you are properly protected....
Keep your head and ears covered and hands too. Appropriate running pants and jacket will also help. You don't have to bundle the way you would if you were just going to be standing around in the cold...don't pile on too much clothing, you will generate plenty of warmth by running.
The cold air isn't harmful to your lungs or joints.
I ran this morning, it was 20 degrees out. I wore a long sleeve dryfit shirt, nylon jacket, nylon running pants gloves and hat...perfectly comfortable once I got going...
I love winter running, much more comfortable than the heat of summer
