I've had foot fungus before and went on sporanox for few months and they went away but now they are back. Skins are ok but my toenails look hideous. Couple of them are thick and one of them is whitish in colour.

So the doctor said we can try a stronger one this time, and I am now on "Terbanafine". I have to take it for the next three months.

Now, I am sure the drug will work and the nails will go back to normal but what can I do to prevent it from coming back? I am getting a new slipper and maybe new shoe as well. I'll try to keep my feet dry too but I noticed that they do sweat quite a bit. Also, I only get athlete's foot on my right, never on my left feet. Weird.

1. Wear cotton athletic socks, not spandex-cotton trouser socks.
2. Avoid synthetic-lined shoes; wear either leather uppers, or cotton uppers (or a mix of the two).
3. Take your shoes off as soon as you get home, and don't put them on until you're at the door to leave. Walk in socks, or barefoot if your house has wooden/tile floors or CLEAN carpets.
4. Keep your feet clean but do -not- use antibacterial or deodorant soap.
5. You could try the charcoal inserts from Dr. Scholl's but I've heard mixed reviews on whether or not they actually do anything (other than provide a comfy padding).

These are preventatives, not treatments. However, following the advice above can help whatever treatment you're using work more efficiently.

I suggest that you begin a maintenance dose of Iodine supplement.

Fungal infections are systemic. You can treat the surface of the skin but that is only the bloom of the plant, the real grow of the fungus is systemic and it is only blooming on your feet.

I have known men who have had really bad re-occurring crotch rot, and it was iodine that finally stopped it from re-occurring.

Athlete's foot or tinea pedis is "by definition" a "surface infection" it is NOT a systemic disease...

An oral iodine supplement will do absolutely NOTHING to treat tinea pedis
