I wonder how often careers advisors consider whether or not occupations they are directing people at, are going to be harmful to their health.
Many jobs may seem a good prospect, but are they?
Here are a couple for starters:
Office jobs, nice and safe? When you consider that even Children are now becoming obese and at risk of developing DVTs from sitting still for long periods of time whilst Gaming, what does this say about jobs that require you to stay still for long periods of time?
How about a bit of Gardening, outside, all that clean fresh air, and exercise? How about all the poisonous chemicals required to be used, the breathing of fumes from machinery, or even prolonged exposure to the sun?
Many jobs can become bad for your health... It depends on the individual and how they handle different types of stress.
I work a job that is "public" challenging. There are those that I help out with difficult catastropies and then I deal with (with the economy this has gone up by the way) people calling in fraudulent claims. Some very demanding and nasty while others are so very kind and nice.
Most people burn out on this type of job in about 2 years but with few jobs out there most of us just keep doing the best we can and try to work off the stress with our hobbies outside of work. I leave work at work so that helps quite a bit...
I'd say that any job you hate is bad for your health. And vice versa. And I agree with naturesdreams b/c I can handle the stress at certain kinds of jobs better than others, even if I like the work equally, so I'd say any job that stresses you out in a negative way is also bad for you.
My job is definitely bad for my health. I work in a pharma lab (at least part of the day on most days) and there are drugs and chemicals all over the place. We take precautions (coats, gloves, etc), but it's dangerous. There's always memo's about this or that fire, chemical spill, etc. One of my colleagues recently quit to go back to school for a grad degree in comp sci. She was working with a drug for two years that poses infertility side effects. Screw that.
