I'm 48 and have had high blood pressure for about 4 or 5 years now. The first thing I did was lose weight, and my BP was actually WORSE. I have been on several different medications and have had lots of dosage adjustments, but the results are ALWAYS the same. It may work for a little while (a few weeks at most) but then it goes right back to being messed up. I'm on two meds now, and it is running 160/110. I run back and forth to the doctor constantly (missing work and costing $$) and nothing is getting resolved. I don't know whether I should refer myself to a nephrologist or what. Anyone with the same experience got any advice?
What does your diet look like? It is great you lost weight, but if your diet is high in sodium and cholesteral then you are not doing yourself any favors. I am much younger then you and have similar problem. I am adjusting my diet and on days I decide to eat whatever, my bp spikes.
I'm not sure a nephrologist would see you without a diagnosis of kidney disease.
You do need to ask your primary care doctor if you should be tested for any conditions for which high blood preeure may be a symptom, rather than a separate diagnosis. This is called secondary hypertension.
Secondary HT is due to a disease process...there are other types beside primary and secondary. Malignant HT is less rare these days, there's also resistant HT . It could be anything, kidney, liver, heart, Sleep Apnea, Syndrome, tumors, etc... What does your PCP say? I would get a complete high level physical with all the bells and whistles. If you need to start somewhere, I would start with your PCP making a referral to an appropriate doctor.
There is always stress as the culprit. Does your family have a history?
Your primary doctor should be refering you to a cardiologist for further testing. I had similiar conditions and tests showed a blocked artery and the doc sent me right in to the hospital to have a stent put in. Made a big difference immediately.
